Halibut / Salmon
Fishing:
|
The charter begins with a short ride from Reel 'Em
Inn to the beach at Deep Creek. We will launch the boat in the
surf using the famous “Deep Creek Tractors” (quite a sight if
you’ve never seen it). If you are on a combination
charter, we’ll troll for about 3 hours along the beach before high
tide for King salmon, then head out at high tide for the halibut. All the
king salmon heading up Cook Inlet toward their home
streams where they will spawn, pass by us first, and that can
produce some really hot fishing. If you are on a Halibut
only charter we'll depart from our place about an hour and a
half before high tide. Occasionally we fish the low tide for
halibut.
As we hit the water you will be sitting on a comfortable
seat under a full height hardtop, protected from the
weather. The boats are equipped with porta-potties, all
U.S.C.G. required safety equipment, and the latest electronics
to help us find our fishing spots and the fish. You will be
using high quality rods, reels, and terminal tackle. The
fishing gear, bait and fish filleting are all included in the
cost of your charter. |

The average
Halibut charter runs 6 to 8 hours, add 2 hours for a combination
charter.
These times are dependant on the magnitude of the tide and
weather. Please come prepared and on time, as the tide waits
for no one.
A world record
(unofficial) halibut was caught just off Deep Creek in September
of 1987 by a 70 year old woman. The halibut was 94 inches
long and was estimated to weigh 466 pounds. There was not
a scale large enough in town to weigh the monster! In 2002 the
winning halibut in the Ninilchik Halibut Derby weighed in at 375
pounds. There are a few really big halibut caught in Cook
Inlet each Summer. One may be waiting for you.
You will be
fishing out of a 26 or 27 foot vessel, specially set up to catch
some fish. Six people maximum per vessel per Coast Guard
regulations. Your skipper is U.S.
Coast Guard licensed, insured and a very experienced guide. Our
goal is to show you a good time on the Charter and hopefully
fill your cooler in the process. You'll find
our rates
very reasonable.
WE PROVIDE:
All fishing equipment, bait, safety gear and the FUN! We also
have raingear and boots available if you do not have your own.
WHAT YOU
NEED TO BRING: An Alaskan
fishing license (we can sell these to you at our camp, cost
depends on how long you get one for, lately it's been $10 for 1
day, $20 for 3 days, $30 for 7 days, $50 for 14 days, if you are going King fishing you also have
to have a King stamp, similarly priced), warm clothes (hats,
rubber boots, gloves, coat) especially in May and late Aug/Sept,
raingear as the rear deck (where all the action's at!!) is not
covered. Bring whatever you want to eat and drink during
the trip (8-10 hours, depending on weather and tides), and a
desire to have some fun!

It can be cool

What to do
with all the fish carcasses. |
When we return we'll hang the fish up back
at the Reel 'Em Inn for a picture taking session. Then the work
begins…
PROCESSING YOUR CATCH: we will filet your
fish for you, and then you can either pay us to vacuum pack them
or you can pack them however you like. We offer freezing in
our walk-in freezer, storage lockers if you need to store the
fish for a period of time, or we can box and ship your fish to
you. Most people take their fish home
frozen as baggage (seems most airlines limit you to #50, but
excess baggage is usually cheaper than FedEx) If you intend to return
home within 3-4 days you may consider packing the fish on ice,
and taking it home fresh.). Halibut can last 4-5 days
if properly iced, salmon 3-4 days. For those of you who don't
want to take their fish back as baggage on the airplane (check
with your airline about baggage regulations), we can ship your
fish to you via FedEx. Some people will bring 50 Qt. coolers for
their fish, although the fish packing boxes hold the cold
better. It depends how long your travel time will be. The
coolers are fine for the airplane, boxes a necessity for FedEx.
We have an assortment of fish boxes you may purchase to
transport your fish home.

We
normally do a few charters out of Seward in August. The days
vary each year due to the tides. We fish for black bass,
lingcod, yellow eye, and silver salmon. If you plan to be in
Seward in August and you would like to charter a fishing trip
like this, give us a call and we might be able to set something
up.
